Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies essential with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

Tuchel wants the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Personal talent is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when fame dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at the tournament in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude displays the edge. You need that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. We all must help him and create a atmosphere which he can use this edge towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. He has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is in as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this vision regarding him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to representing his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for City at defense. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an superior one.
