The US President Urges Thailand to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodia Ceasefire with Trade Penalties
Washington has exerted influence on Thailand to recommit to a ceasefire agreement with the Cambodian side, indicating that trade negotiations could be halted as efforts are made to prevent a Trump-mediated ceasefire arrangement from collapsing.
Border Tensions Escalate
Earlier this week, Thai officials announced it was putting on hold the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodian forces of planting new explosives along the shared border, among them an incident that reportedly wounded a Thai military personnel on duty, who lost a foot in the blast.
Since then, one person has been killed and several others wounded by exchanges of fire along the Thai-Cambodia frontier, raising concerns of a fresh wave of tit-for-tat fighting.
US Trade Pressure
Over the weekend, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson told journalists that a official communication from the U.S. trade office announcing the pause in trade negotiations was received on Friday night.
He quoted the letter as stating that trade negotiations – which are focusing on a US tariff of 19% – could restart once Thailand renewed its pledge to implementing the mutual truce agreement.
“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” stated a different official representative.
President’s Economic Warning
Speaking to the press on Air Force One as he traveled to the Sunshine State on the end of the week, the US leader implied that he had employed tariff warnings in discussions with the south-east Asian leaders.
The US president said, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” continuing, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”
Ceasefire Agreement Background
The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has promoted it as one of multiple agreements around the globe he claims should earn him the prestigious peace award.
The worst fighting in a ten years between military forces of both nations erupted in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes causing numerous fatalities and 300,000 displaced.
Longstanding Border Dispute
The two neighboring countries have a historic territorial disagreement that originates from conflicts regarding colonial-era maps created by French cartographers. Historic shrines along the border are disputed by each nation.
