At least 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Locals have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the operation, together with numerous weapons.

The combined action by civil and military police was preceded by a extended probe.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

The UN climate summit the climate conference is scheduled in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
