American Social Media Influencer Penalized After Large-Scale E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation following a large group of electric bicycle users converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Incident: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"This had potential for people to be injured and killed," remarked a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the riders due to concerns for public safety but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

Later in the week, authorities stated they had issued the American online personality known as Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for careless operation (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that inquiries were continuing.

The influencer is said to have over 3.4m followers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The online figure gave comments to a local publication recently after the incident gained traction on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he said. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. So when I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we turn around, basically, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for regulation. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are absolutely devastating," the minister said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] police are granted the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW reported over two hundred injuries related to electric bikes in 2024. But, in the initial half of 2025, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
